The Los Angeles County Fire Department is battling a 2-alarm brush fire in the Acton area that prompted evacuations on Friday afternoon.

The Crown Fire is approximately 280 acres with a low rate of spread, as of 2:15 p.m. It’s 5% contained.

According to the LAFD, there are possible structures threatened.

It was first reported at approximately 12:26 p.m. in the area of Crown Valley and Soledad Canyon Road in Acton, according to an incident report.

The flames from the Springs fire were pushed by strong easterly Santa Ana wind gusts from the Banning Pass, said Kyle Wheeler, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s San Diego office. Although the fire’s starting point was not directly in the pass, it was still driven by 30 to 40 mph wind gusts, he said.

“That allowed the fire to set up quickly and become the first wildfire of the season,” Wheeler said.

Residents north of John F. Kennedy Drive and west of Sinclair Street and Redlands Boulevard were under an evacuation warning as of 1 p.m.Lt. Deirdre Vickers of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said several evacuations were being requested for the Lake Perris area.

The Sheriff’s Department was also assisting firefighters with road closures in and around Hemet and the Moreno Valley.

LAFD officials said more information about the fire can be found here.
