The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced nearly $18 million in funding to support migrant response needs in San Antonio through the Shelter and Services Program (SSP).

The allocated funds are set to benefit various organizations in San Antonio, including:

  • Episcopal Diocese of West Texas: $1,041,370
  • City of San Antonio, Bexar County: $3,000,000
  • Interfaith Welcome Coalition, San Antonio: $500,000
  • San Antonio Food Bank, San Antonio County: $2,400,000
  • Catholic Charities Archdiocese of San Antonio, Inc., Bexar County: $10,877,226

In response to the announcement, Congressman Castro stated, “For months, I’ve been working with Catholic Charities and other service providers in San Antonio to make the case for more federal resources to support asylum-seekers who pass through our city.

The nearly $18 million in grants that FEMA announced today will help the Migrant Resource Center and allow San Antonio to offer basic humanitarian services without straining local resources.”

The funding announcement comes as part of a broader effort by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to address the ongoing challenges posed by migration at the southern border.

DHS has allocated $300 million in grants through the SSP to support communities providing services to migrants.

An additional $340.9 million will be distributed through the Shelter and Services Program-Competitive grant program.
