More than 2,500 visitors were forced to evacuate the Phoenix Zoo on Friday after authorities responded to a bomb threat that triggered a large-scale emergency response.
Police and bomb squad units rushed to the scene as zoo staff quickly moved families, children, employees, and volunteers out of the park as a precaution. According to reports and eyewitness accounts, the evacuation happened around midday while the zoo was crowded with guests and school groups.
After an extensive search of the property using K-9 units and explosive detection teams, officials confirmed that no explosives or dangerous devices were found. The threat was ultimately determined to be unfounded, and everyone inside the zoo was reported safe.
The incident appears to be part of a growing wave of bomb threats and “swatting” calls targeting public venues across the country. Similar evacuations were reported Friday at other zoos, including the Louisville Zoo and the Toledo Zoo.
Social media posts from visitors described a tense scene as crowds were directed toward exits while police vehicles surrounded the area. One zoo employee stated online that all staff members and animals were safe and that the emergency had been cleared later in the day.
The zoo reportedly remained closed for the rest of Friday as authorities continued investigating the source of the threat. No arrests have been announced at this time.
