On April 22, 2026, at around 2:30 p.m., officers responded to the East North Street area in Greenville, South Carolina after a passerby reported seeing a man with a visible head wound. Upon arrival, officers found an injured rideshare driver and provided medical assistance before he was transported to a hospital.

The victim had been stabbed 11 times in multiple areas of his body, including the head. He was initially hospitalized in intensive care but survived.

Investigators determined the driver had responded to a Lyft request at an apartment complex in the East North Street area.

Authorities said 22-year-old Naziyha La’Nay Weatherall approached the vehicle and allegedly attacked the driver with a knife before stealing his car.

Weatherall was located shortly afterward and taken into custody.

She was charged with attempted murder, carjacking resulting in bodily injury and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Weatherall was denied bond and remained in the Greenville County Detention Center.

On August 28, 2026, Weatherall returned to court for another bond hearing.

Prosecutors argued she posed an extreme danger to the community and emphasized that the victim had simply been working when he was attacked.

The victim’s wife told the court her husband remained too emotionally and mentally shaken to attend the hearing.

Weatherall’s defense attorney told the court she had no previous criminal record and was experiencing a severe mental health crisis at the time of the attack.

According to the defense, Weatherall had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was experiencing delusions that she was being watched, listened to and attacked.

Her attorney said Weatherall had requested the Lyft because she was trying to get to a police station to report what she believed was happening.

Weatherall’s mother had allegedly called the police station to let officers know her daughter was on the way.

The defense said Weatherall’s mental state worsened during the ride and she began believing she was being trafficked.

Her attorney said Weatherall has since been medicated and is currently stable and competent.

The defense requested her release so Weatherall’s family and social worker could arrange placement in a treatment facility.

Weatherall’s mother also apologized to the victim’s family during the hearing.

The judge denied bond for a second time and ordered Weatherall to remain in custody until a psychological evaluation is completed in September.
