Attorney General Letitia James’s office on Tuesday released the body camera footage of the fatal shooting of a Northampton man by Southampton Town Police officers on Mother’s Day.
The camera footage shows that the officers fired six shots at the man, Steven Eastwood, as he stood over his mother’s prone body in her home, stabbing her repeatedly with a large knife.
The footage from the bodycams of all three officers starts as they dash from the driveway toward the home on Topping Drive on the afternoon of May 10. fter being dispatched to the property following two 911 calls from Eastwood’s mother, who had said her son was at the house, intoxicated and threatening her with a knife.
As the officers enter the house, first into a foyer and then turning to the right into a kitchen and dining area, the first glimpse of Eastwood shows him bent over his mother, who is on the floor, with his back to the officers. His mother can be heard groaning as she lays on her back on the floor — at one point she simply says “Ow” over and over again. An empty wheelchair is beside her.
When Eastwood straightens up and turns toward the officers, both of his forearms and chest can be seen covered in blood, the knife still in his hand.
