Authorities in Angelina County say a disturbing discovery at a local cemetery has led to the arrest of a Lufkin mother, accused of exhuming the body of her own newborn daughter. Investigators were called after a gravesite was found tampered with, uncovering a heartbreaking scene that has left the community shaken. Officials allege the infant’s remains were removed from the burial site, prompting a swift investigation that ultimately resulted in charges being filed against the child’s mother.

Tamisha Cheyniece Drake, 33, of Lufkin, was arrested for abuse of a corpse by Angelina County Sheriff’s deputies after a report came in about a disturbed grave at Davis Memorial Gardens in the Cedar Grove area.

Investigators developed information that led them to Drake, the infant’s mother. During an interview with deputies, Drake admitted she had dug up the body, then told investigators where she had left the container with the body.

Deputies responded Thursday and found the grave for a newborn infant had been dug up. The baby’s body and the container the infant was buried in were missing.

Deputies went to North Avenue in the city and found the container, with the body still inside, on the driveway of an unoccupied residence where Drake said it would be.

The infant did not survive childbirth and died in February. Colonial Mortuary of Lufkin provided a proper burial for the infant and, along with officers from the Lufkin Police Department, assisted deputies during the investigation.
