QB Brendan Sorsby and Texas Tech are mutually parting way: Will not play in 2026
On Monday night, multiple outlets reported that Texas Tech and Sorsby are agreeing to mutually part ways amidst the fallout from the gambling scandal that has rocked college football and much of the sports world over the last several weeks.
Earlier this offseason, Sorsby — a transfer from Cincinnati — was declared ineligible for the 2026 season by the NCAA after it came to light that he had a gambling problem, and had wagered over a thousand times, with a total of over $90,000 in bets placed, including on his own team, over the course of the last several years.
Sorsby had a local judge in Texas grant him a temporary injunction, making it so he could play for the Red Raiders in 2026. However, this ruling caused a massive stir in the sports world, with the masses calling for Texas Tech to do the right thing and not allow Sorsby to play.
Initially, head coach Joey McGuire, athletic director Kirby Hocutt, and mega-booster Cody Campbell all stood by Sorsby. In the end, though, it appears that the fire got too hot, and the threat of multiple lawsuits and potential cancellation of games led the Red Raiders to a split with their highly-priced transfer QB.
At long last, it appears that the Brendan Sorsby drama with the Texas Tech Red Raiders is coming to an end.
