On Monday, officers were dispatched to reported domestic disturbance at an apartment on Diplomat Court around 5:40 p.m. Neighbors reported hearing a woman begging for help.
Elliott and his partner arrived at the scene. They also heard a woman screaming and crying inside the apartment. Elliott kicked the door open; authorities allege Johnson fired, striking Elliott and the other officer.
Kenneth Terrell Johnson faces the following charges:
- Murder

- Criminal Confinement while armed with a deadly weapon (Level 3 Felony)
- Domestic Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon (Level 5 Felony)
- Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon (Level 5 Felony)

His initial hearing is scheduled for Friday morning
According to the probable cause affidavit filed this week by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, investigators found signs of a struggle inside the apartment along with cartridge casings in the apartment and a hallway.
A review of body camera footage found Elliott and the other officer heard Johnson threaten to kill a woman as they stood outside the apartment. Elliott knocked on the door, and Johnson asked, “Who is it?”
Elliott answered, “Police!”
