Kentucky football sends a warning to the SEC: Will Stein has the Wildcats believing
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Big Blue Nation, is Kentucky football building something special? After Saturday night’s thrilling 35–34 overtime victory over No. 10 LSU, the Wildcats have given college football another reason to take notice.
Head coach Will Stein is making an early statement in his first season, and Kentucky is showing that it can compete with some of the biggest names in the Southeastern Conference.
This wasn’t just another win. It was a battle that demanded toughness, resilience, and confidence when the pressure was at its highest.
Kentucky opened the game with a spectacular 77-yard run by C.J. Baxter, setting the tone against a highly ranked LSU defense. The Wildcats also delivered a punt-return touchdown through Brock Coffman, proving that their impact could come from more than just the offense.
But the biggest moment came in overtime.
After LSU scored first, Baxter punched in a one-yard touchdown for Kentucky. Instead of settling for a tie, Stein’s team went for two points and the victory. Quarterback Kenny Minchey found an opening and ran into the end zone, sending Kroger Field into absolute chaos.
The result? A 35–34 upset and another statement victory for the Wildcats. Kentucky also became the first FBS team to win consecutive overtime games by exactly one point. Both victories came by the same score.
So, should other SEC programs be paying attention? Absolutely.
Stein is building a team that believes it belongs on the same field as the nation’s elite. His aggressive decisions, combined with the players’ ability to deliver under pressure, are giving Kentucky fans legitimate reasons for excitement.
There is still plenty of football left, and consistency will determine how far this team can go. But one thing is becoming clear: Kentucky is no longer a team opponents can afford to overlook.
Big Blue Nation has a reason to believe, and the rest of the SEC has been put on notice.
The Will Stein era is heating up. Could Kentucky be the SEC’s next major surprise?
