Five women are recovering at the hospital after they were attacked with sulfuric acid in New Jersey on Monday night, according to a spokesperson for Jersey City.

According to police, the incident appears to be targeted and may have stemmed from an argument with a large group of people earlier in the day.

The women were near 105 Wilkinson Ave. in Jersey City when two people on a moped drove past their car and threw acid on them, the spokesperson said. They were all transported to the hospital with skin burns and peeling but were expected to survive, the spokesperson reported.

“My thoughts are with those hurt in this horrific attack, and I want our communities to know that violence like this has absolutely no place on our streets,” said Jersey City Mayor James Solomon in a statement.
