African “KILLER LAKE” could kill millions, experts fear
Potentially deadly gases gathered over centuries beneath a rift lake between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo could erupt at any time and threaten the lives of millions, warn researchers.
Lake Kivu is situated near one of the world’s most active volcanos – Mount Nyiragongo – meaning a limnic eruption or poisonous gas clouds could be triggered with little warning.
The last such event happened in 1986 at a lake in Cameroon, with 1,800 people died from asphyxiation.
