Residents across parts of Austin were told to shelter in place Sunday after police launched a massive search for a suspect connected to a string of shootings across the city. Authorities say the suspect may be tied to at least nine separate shooting scenes reported throughout the weekend, leaving multiple people injured and neighborhoods on edge.
According to the Austin Police Department, the shootings appear to be random, with incidents reported at several locations — including two Austin fire stations. Officials confirmed at least two people were injured, though some reports suggest the number of victims could be higher as the investigation continues.
Police issued an emergency shelter-in-place alert covering a large section of South Austin bordered by South Slaughter Lane, East McKinney Falls Parkway, North Ben White Boulevard, and West Escarpment Boulevard. Residents were urged to stay indoors, lock doors, and report any suspicious activity immediately.
Investigators believe the suspect may be a male in his late teens and could be driving a white Kia Optima, though authorities later warned the suspect may also be connected to other vehicles, including dark-colored sedans. SWAT teams, K9 units, and multiple law enforcement agencies were seen searching neighborhoods and wooded areas as the manhunt intensified.
Officials say there is currently no known motive behind the attacks. The situation remains active and developing as police continue their search for what they describe as an armed and dangerous suspect.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Austin police or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
