She called a relative around midnight, making confusing statements about “evil spirits.” Hours later, deputies found her 6-year-old daughter stabbed to death inside their home.

On February 25, 2026, deputies responded to a residence on Nowling Drive near Milton, Florida, after a concerned family member discovered 6-year-old Valerie Oliva deceased inside the home.

According to investigators, Valerie suffered more than 20 stab wounds. A kitchen knife was located in the dining room.

Deputies said the child’s mother, April Oliva, was found lying next to her daughter with multiple cut wounds that authorities determined were self-inflicted. She is currently in stable condition.

Records state that April Oliva had called a relative shortly before midnight, making alarming and confusing statements. A family member was sent to check on her and initially could not enter the home but heard her yelling inside. After gaining entry and discovering the scene, that relative called 911.

Authorities confirmed that Valerie’s father was out of town for work at the time of the incident and that no one else was inside the home.

April Oliva has been charged with second-degree murder. She will be booked into the Santa Rosa County Jail upon release from the hospital.

“This is a horrific incident,” Chief Deputy Randy Tift said.
