Missouri cop shot dead and another injured after shootout

The search for a St. Louis County man stretched into the afternoon on Monday following a shooting that killed one police officer here and injured another.

Hermann police Detective Sgt. Mason Griffith died of his injuries at a hospital after being shot at a convenience store in the small town just before 9:30 p.m. Sunday, the Missouri Highway Patrol said.

The second Hermann officer who was shot, Adam Sullentrup, 31, has undergone surgery and remains hospitalized in serious condition, authorities said. 

The patrol issued a “Blue Alert” and identified the suspect as Kenneth Lee Simpson, 35, of Eureka. Such an alert is issued when an officer is killed or seriously injured.

Search for the suspect has largely focused on a 1½-story house in the 100 block of Highway 19, a few doors from the Casey’s.

Two women came out with their hands up Sunday night and got into a squad car, telling police there was someone still in the home. 

Officers brought in spotlights to see between two homes. A next-door neighbor was told to leave and sent to a hotel for the night.

A tactical unit was still outside the home some 10 hours later. Mostly they waited, but the efforts picked up after 11 a.m.

Monday when they sent a robot onto the front porch. The robot pulled off the screen door, then officers flew a drone into the house.
