A devastating explosion at an explosives storage facility in Namhkam Township, northern Myanmar, has reportedly killed at least 55 people and injured more than 60 others, according to local media and rescue workers. The blast occurred Sunday in the village of Kaungtup, near Myanmar’s border with China, sending a massive shockwave through the area and leaving widespread destruction in its wake.

Early reports indicate the warehouse was storing gelignite explosives used for mining and quarry operations. The facility was reportedly linked to the economic department of the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), which controls the region. Authorities say an investigation is underway to determine what triggered the explosion.

Rescue crews worked through the day recovering bodies and transporting dozens of injured residents to local hospitals. Some reports place the death toll between 50 and 55 victims, while more than 100 homes in surrounding neighborhoods were damaged or destroyed by the blast. Images from the scene show collapsed buildings, scattered debris, and thick smoke rising over the township.

The tragedy highlights the dangers associated with storing large quantities of industrial explosives. Gelignite, commonly used in mining operations, can become highly unstable if improperly handled or stored for long periods. Officials have not yet released a final casualty count, and numbers could rise as search-and-rescue operations continue.

The explosion comes amid ongoing instability in Myanmar following years of conflict between the military government and ethnic armed groups. Namhkam has remained under TNLA control since major offensives in northern Shan State reshaped the region in recent years.

Developing story — casualty figures may change as authorities continue rescue and recovery efforts.
