Dow Jones Futures Rise, Oil Prices Fall: Trump Says No ‘Rush’ For Iran Deal
Dow Jones futures rose Sunday evening, along with S&P 500 futures and especially Nasdaq futures, while crude oil prices tumbled. President Donald Trump said Sunday that the U.S. and Iran are close to an interim deal but said that he’s in no “rush.”
The stock market last week shrugged off a brief, orderly pullback, as crude oil prices and Treasury yields fell on hopes for an Iran deal. The Dow Jones hit a record high Friday with the other indexes close behind, even with an afternoon fade. Many leading stocks made bullish rebounds, with several surging past key levels.
Tesla (TSLA) is flirting with an early entry. Chip-gear giant ASML (ASML) and optical plays Lumentum (LITE), Viavi (VIAV), Corning (GLW) are actionable. GE Vernova (GEV) is setting up nicely.
Crude oil fell to the lowest level in more than two weeks and the dollar weakened on expectations that a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and restore oil flows may be near.
Brent dropped more than 5% to about $98 a barrel as the US and Iran appeared to close in on a deal. The dollar weakened against all its Group-of-10 peers, gold jumped and US equity-index futures rallied on the optimism that a deal will help resume the flow of energy through the vital Middle East artery and ease inflation pressures.
American Airlines stock traded higher today as oil prices dropped on hopes that negotiations between the U.S. and Iran might lead to an end to the conflict and a reopening of the crucial Strait of Hormuz. A Bank of America report this week showing airline demand remains strong, as well as the opening of four new routes, also helped boost the stock.
Longer term, the company could benefit from the demise of Spirit Airlines and a credit card agreement with Citigroup. However, the stock is still down almost 10% so far this year, and until there’s a clear path to normalize oil supplies, it is likely to be volatile.
