Brittany Jeffers, 31 and Charles Turley, 33, of Poca have been charged with child neglect causing injury, according to a news release from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
Both have been arrested after investigators said their 1-year-old daughter overdosed on fentanyl.
The release said deputies were dispatched to Sargent Square Apartments shortly after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday after medics found a toddler overdosing.
Medics reported administering Narcan and taking the child to CAMC Women & Children’s Hospital.
According to deputies, the parents claimed the child put a plastic bag into her mouth at Town Park in Poca, but a review of surveillance footage did not show the family at the park.
Investigators said a search of the couple’s apartment revealed two pills suspected to be Xanax on the floor along with “countless used, uncapped needles” that could be accessed by the child.
Deputies noted the child was stabilized and admitted for observation at the hospital while a temporary protection plan was developed by Child Protective Services, permitting custody to a relative.
According to a criminal complaint filed against the couple, the child reportedly tested positive for fentanyl during a drug screening at the hospital.
