She Was Stabbed While On Lunch Break. A Suspect Was Arrested 20 Minutes Later.

Around 2:30 p.m., officers responded to an alley near Woodward Avenue and East Congress Street in Detroit, Michigan, for a reported stabbing. Upon arrival, officers learned a woman had been stabbed multiple times before making her way toward a nearby business, where she collapsed.

The victim was identified by her family as 34-year-old Jaquoya Wix.

Wix had been on a break from her job at a nearby Chipotle when investigators said a man came into the alley, pulled out a knife and stabbed her multiple times. Police said there appeared to have been very little interaction between Wix and the man before the attack.

Despite her injuries, Wix managed to leave the alley and make it toward a nearby business. She was transported to a hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Investigators said an employee at a nearby business saw the suspected attacker running away with what appeared to be a weapon and chased him through the downtown area before eventually losing sight of him.

Police then used surveillance cameras and other technology throughout the downtown area to track the man’s movements.

Approximately 20 minutes after the stabbing, officers located a man in his 40s near Woodward Avenue and State Street and took him into custody.

Investigators later identified the man as 42-year-old Devon Jason Watson of Detroit.

Police said Wix and Watson did not know one another, and prosecutors described the attack as random.

Investigators later recovered what they believe was the knife used in the stabbing inside a restroom at the Sugar Factory on Monroe Street. The weapon was collected and processed as evidence.

On September 23, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office charged Watson with first-degree premeditated murder.

Prosecutors allege Watson approached Wix while she was sitting in the alley on her break and stabbed her multiple times with a knife.

Watson was arraigned by video later that day and denied bond.

His probable-cause conference is scheduled for September 30.

The investigation remains ongoing.
