Two people have been killed and 35 others injured after more than 50 shots were fired near a massive neighborhood block party in Georgia.

More than 1,000 people were gathered in Vienna when gunfire broke out around 1:25 a.m. Sunday, with officials saying shots were fired in at least two locations about a block apart.

Most of the victims suffered gunshot wounds, while others were hit by vehicles or injured as people fled the chaos.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Dooly County Sheriff’s Office deputies were already patrolling the block party when shots were fired from the 900 block of Pine Street at approximately 1:25 a.m.

More Than 1,000 People Reportedly at Block Party

The shooting occurred during a large gathering that coincided with Dooly County High School’s homecoming weekend.

Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy told WMAZ-TV that more than 1,000 people were gathered along Pine Street when the violence erupted, according to reporting by The Associated Press.

People began running in multiple directions after the shooting started. Peavy said additional gunfire could be heard about a block away even as law enforcement officers were responding to the initial scene.

Deputies had already been assigned to patrol the neighborhood gathering before the shooting.

Authorities have not publicly said how many people fired weapons or what precipitated the violence.

The 35 injured people ranged in age from 14 to 51, according to authorities. ABC Columbia reported that some remained in critical condition Sunday evening, while others were stable.

Crisp Regional Hospital, about nine miles from the shooting scene, activated its trauma and emergency response procedures shortly after 2 a.m.

By 2 p.m. Sunday, Crisp Regional had treated 26 patients connected to the incident. According to Atlanta News First, two patients were transferred to other facilities, two required emergency surgery, several were admitted for continued treatment, and others were treated and released. Additional victims received care elsewhere in the region.
