The 14-year-old has also been accused in connection with the baby’s death. However, Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto has emphasized that the girl is considered a victim as well and expressed concern for her safety.
“We just need the public’s help to locate the 14-year-old so we can get her to safety,” Nieto said, according to reporting on the investigation.
Investigators reportedly used automated license-plate reader technology to identify a vehicle connected to Perez. His wife, Ofelia Garcia Ortega, was subsequently arrested and charged with child endangerment, according to authorities cited in reports.
Perez remains wanted on allegations including incest and lewd acts involving a minor, while authorities continue working to locate him and the teenager.
The circumstances surrounding the newborn’s death remain under investigation. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the whereabouts of Perez or the 14-year-old to contact law enforcement.
