A 16-year-old boy has died after a shooting inside a busy downtown shopping centre in Hamilton on Friday afternoon, sending shockwaves through the community.
Police say officers were called to Jackson Square around 5 p.m. following reports of gunfire inside a store. When first responders arrived, they found the teenage victim suffering from life-threatening injuries.
The boy was rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite emergency efforts, he later succumbed to his wounds.
Authorities have not yet released details about a suspect or what may have led to the shooting. The investigation remains active, and police are urging anyone who was in the area at the time or who may have information to come forward.
They are described as white men between the ages of 19 and 20 years old. One was wearing a grey tracksuit, the other wearing a blue tracksuit.
Officers add that both were believed to be carrying firearms. Police describe one of the weapons carried by the suspects as a “long firearm.” The public is being advised to not approach the men.
Detectives say they mall is expected to be closed for the next few hours while they investigate.
Road closures are in effect between King, James and MacNab streets. Members of the public are being asked to avoid the area.
