Moria Akers gave birth inside of her Howard County, Maryland home. She put her newborn baby inside a zip-lock bag.
Akers has been found guilty of second-degree murder and first-degree child abuse in April 2022.
Paramedics responded to Moira Akers’s home on November 1, 2018. Akers had given birth to a baby boy but did not tell this information to the first responders. They rushed her to the hospital, who treated her, and called the police.
Police responded to her home to conduct a welfare check and found a newborn baby boy “in a zipped plastic bag under a blanket in a closet with the door shut.”
When police asked about the baby, Akers told them he was stillborn.
The medical examiner was able to determine that the newborn was a healthy, full-term baby who was alive at the time of birth.
The manner of death was ruled a homicide; and the cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation and exposure.
According to news outlets, police discovered Akers searched the internet looking how to terminate a pregnancy.
Akers was arrested and in April 2022 she was found guilty of second-degree murder and first-degree child abuse in April 2022. A judge will sentence her on July 29, 2022. Akers faces life in prison.
