This week, a 38-year-old woman was strangled to death in Zion, and a Chicago man was charged with the crime.
The 50-year-old Craig Larsen was charged with first-degree murder.
Monday at 11 a.m., the Zion Police Department responded to the 2200 block of Lewis Avenue, where a family member discovered the victim unresponsive.
According to the police, the woman had been dead for “some time” and was last seen alive two days earlier.
Investigators discovered indicators of a struggle. Further investigation was requested of the Lake County Coroner’s Office and the Lake County Major Crime Task Force’s evidence technicians.
Tuesday’s autopsy revealed the woman was strangled to death, and her death was ruled a homicide.
The Coroner’s Office of Lake County identified the woman as Kristin Pitak.
Neighbors reported that although the woman lived alone, she had a male friend who frequently visited her apartment.
The man, according to investigators, was later identified as Larsen.
When detectives spoke with Larsen, he allegedly made unsolicited remarks about the victim’s death. Additionally, he had wounds and scratches on his face, hands, and arms.
This week, Larsen appeared in bond court and was ordered to be held at the Lake County Jail on a $5 million bond.
