The woman shot by a Killeen Police Department officer on Dec. 26 was released from the hospital and taken to jail on Thursday.
Michelle Ero, 44, is in Bell County Jail, according to her family, and is being held at $450,000 bond. She was charged with three counts of aggravated assault against a public servant.
Jessica Ero, Michelle Ero’s sister, said it was a “ridiculous” bail amount and that they requested a personal recognizance bond, but was told she didn’t qualify because of the charges against the public officers.
Police said she lunged at an officer with a knife at a vacant building in the 800 block of Adela Street.
The family said she was shot in the face by a police officer.
They said they don’t believe she had a knife.Ero was recovering at Baylor Scott and White when the wound became infected, the family said.
She was transferred to Bell County Jail Thursday.
The family has spoken out saying KPD shot Ero in front of her non-verbal autistic child and handcuffed him for hours which resulted in him wetting his pants.
KPD Chief Peter Lopez Jr. said Wednesday any information on the case would come from the Texas Rangers, who typically investigate officer-involved shootings.
On Thursday, the Herald asked Lopez about KPD’s policy on handcuffing children.
“Our policy requires the officer to utilize discretion in whether to handcuff a juvenile,” he said in an email Thursday.
Lopez, who joined KPD last June, added that he his reviewing that policy and others.
