Woman is accused of putting her miscarried fetus in a cooler and delivering it to the child’s father
A Virginia woman is accused of putting her miscarried fetus in a cooler and delivering it to the child’s father in Missouri.
The woman, 29-year-old Makayla Haedt, has been charged with first-degree harassment.
According to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a house on September 18 for a report of a fetus in a cooler.
According to court documents filed on October 8, Haedt had been in an on-and-off romantic relationship with the man for several years.
The man told a deputy that Haedt was a “habitual liar,” which caused him to doubt her when she claimed to be pregnant one to two months prior.
On the afternoon of September 17, Haedt messaged the man, saying she had suffered a miscarriage but provided no additional details. Later that evening, she picked him up to run errands together.
Around 8:30 p.m., after returning to the man’s Waynesville house, the pair was burning trash when Haedt threw what appeared to be a Walmart bag containing clothes into the fire. She then handed him a red and white cooler secured with green tape.
“Here’s your kid,” Haedt reportedly said before driving away.
The man told deputies that Haedt “didn’t show any sign of remorse or anything when she said it.” Initially believing it was a “cruel joke,” he thought the cooler contained drinks but was hesitant to open it.
After talking with family and friends, the man asked a friend to accompany him when opening the cooler. Upon discovering the fetus, he immediately contacted the sheriff’s office.
Haedt has been charged with first-degree harassment for allegedly causing the victim emotional distress. The case remains under investigation.
Haedt is scheduled to have a bond hearing on October 21.
