Woman found dead in field in Davidson County; according to the sheriff’s office:

• Yesterday, deputies responded to a field near Gumtree Road & Landscape Lane (not far from Gumtree/Old Lexington roads) in reference to an individual lying in a field. When deputies arrived, the individual was pronounced deceased.

• Detectives identified the individual as a 39-year-old female from Winston-Salem, NC. It was determined that the female victim had been murdered and placed in an open field.

• Detectives were able to identify and locate the scene of the murder that occurred as well as the suspect, within the jurisdiction of the Winston-Salem Police Department.
• James Brewton, 56 of Winston Salem, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

According to Winston-Salem police:

• It was determined that the decedent found in Davidson County had been assaulted and murdered at a home on Stockton Street in Winston-Salem, prior to being taken to Gumtree Road.
• The victim was identified as Juana Gomez.
