Woman charged with attempted murder after police say she knowingly attempted to terminate her pregnancy
A South Carolina woman has been charged with attempted murder after police say she knowingly attempted to terminate her pregnancy during the third trimester.
On November 12, 2025, police say a 911 call was made about a woman who experienced a miscarriage at a home in the 1500 block of Riverview Road in Rock Hill.
The Rock Hill Police Department along with emergency medical services arrived at the home, where the woman allegedly told police that she took medication to induce labor with the intention to terminate her pregnancy.
EMS began lifesaving aid and transported the infant to the hospital for further treatment.
The woman, identified as 20-year-old Jocelyn Byrum, was 27 weeks pregnant.
Police said Byrum then failed to render any aid or call EMS for assistance with the newborn child following the birth.
On November 17, Byrum was taken into custody after warrants were issued for attempted murder and unlawful neglect of a child.
The infant is in critical condition.
