Woman Charged After 6-Week-Old Baby Dies While Co-Sleeping And Had Another Baby Die The Same Way Prior
Deter’s office said Hunter had another child who died from the same circumstance a year prior and she was advised of the dangers of co-sleeping at the time.
As a result, the coroner ruled this most recent death a homicide.
Co-sleeping refers to the practice of sleeping in the same bed or close by in the same room with one’s child.
According to a local pediatrician and Ohio’s Chapter of American Academy of Pediatrics President Dr. Chris Peltier, in 2020, Hamilton County had 21 sleep-related infant deaths, which was an all-time high.
“While we would not recommend having your baby in bed with you, there have been studies that show that if a baby is co-located in the parent’s bedroom, that has decreased the risk of SIDS,” Peltier said.
Hamilton County Jobs and Family Services helps parents learn safe sleeping habits for their babies.
“Researching products keeping your kids safe on a flat surface alone, no pillows or blankets, swaddling and sleep sacks when they get a bit earlier,” Section Chief Grace Muntz said.
