Woman Arrested Who Allegedly Tried to Smother Father at Idaho State Veterans Home Has Initial Appearance in Court, Bond Set at $500,000.
Officers with the LPD responded to the Idaho State Veterans Home at approximately 8:20 a.m. Thursday morning for what was initially reported as a battery.
According to a the LPD, Lewiston Police Detectives’ investigation showed that nursing staff interrupted 54-year-old Sandra McCarty while she was on top of a patient with her hands over his mouth.
The patient was her own father, an 81-year-old military veteran, whom McCarty was visiting at the time. McCarty is not an employee of the Idaho State Veterans home.Â
According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Big Country News Connection, the patient told detectives he woke up with McCarty on top of him after she had removed his CPAP mask which he normally sleeps with and had both hands over his nose and mouth.
McCarty was eventually arrested and is currently being held at the Nez Perce County Jail on one count of Attempted First-Degree Murder.
During her initial appearance in court Friday afternoon, Nez Perce County Magistrate Judge Karin Seubert placed McCarty’s bond at $500,000.Â
