A Florida woman allegedly exploited a family’s tragedy by creating a fake GoFundMe in a Camp Mystic child’s name.
Investigators say 28-year-old Maitlin White pretended to be associated with the family of Chloe Childress to solicit donations through GoFundMe and SpotMe.
Chloe Childress, an 18-year-old Camp Mystic counselor from Houston, was tragically killed during the July 2025 flooding. Her family resides in the Houston area. They contacted investigators after they noticed someone was using their daughters image and story to collect funds.
According to court records investigators were able to track down the account to White. She was taken into custody in Okaloosa County, Florida, by a U.S. Marshals Service task force.
She now faces extradition back to Harris County, where the Sheriff’s Office will oversee her return. 28-year-old White was charged with 2 felony counts related to online impersonation.
