For many of us, the hot dog is the quintessential summer food. We snarf them at picnics, ballparks, and over grills and campfires. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, consumers buy about 38% of the hot dogs purchased each year, tallying around $614 million, according to the Hot Dog and Sausage Council.
Public Frank Day, which has been around for around 50 years, was recently celebrated in July when the board and North American Meat Organization facilitated its wiener lunch in Washington, D.C. for lawmakers and legislative staff, said board president Eric Mittenthal, who is likewise the organization’s main procedure official.
During the pandemic, the gathering put the third Wednesday in July to the side as the extraordinary day for wieners proceeding.
Note: The Council estimates Americans consume 20 billion hot dogs a year – more than twice the retail sales figures. That works out to about 70 hot dogs per person each year.
Hot dogs are served in 95 percent of homes in the United States.
