Watch as police release video of standoff, shooting that killed K-9 officer
The suspect, who Burbank police said had documented gang ties, shot and killed a police K-9 after a traffic stop.
Body camera footage released Wednesday shows a beloved Burbank police K-9’s final deployment moments before he was fatally shot by an alleged gang member in November.
The violence unfolded the night of Nov. 22, 2025, when officers pulled over a car along the northbound lanes of the 5 Freeway near Buena Vista Street around 6:40 p.m. The driver cooperated with officers; however, his passenger ran away while clutching something in his waistband, the video shows.
The suspect, later identified as 37-year-old Jose Domingo Ayala Alas, ducked through an opening in a cement sound wall, climbed down a steep embankment and hid in dense brush along a wash near homes, according to police.
Additional officers were called in and established a perimeter, and a police helicopter using infrared located the suspect’s hiding spot.
“The location was situated on a steep embankment with limited visibility, offering little to no cover or concealment to officers to approach,” Burbank Police Lt. Brent Fekety said in a videotaped statement.
