In a statement sent to ABC13 by Averett University, located in Danville, family members confirmed the passing of Dr. David Hanbury on Sunday afternoon. According to the university, Hanbury was attending the Southeastern Psychological Association Conference there and was last seen on the evening of Friday, March 15.
The Orlando Police Department says officers responded to a private men’s club called Club Orlando Saturday for an unattended death call, USA Today reported. Officers were able to identify the body as Hanbury and while a cause of death has not been determined, police believe the death “does not appear suspicious,” according to the outlet.
The university said Dr. Hanbury joined the Averett faculty more than eight years ago and was an associate professor and co-chair of the Psychology Department and served as the chair for the Division of Physical and Psychological Health Sciences.
The university organized a vigil on Monday for faculty, students and the community.
