Deputies responded to a Belmont Drive home in Palatka, Florida after receiving a 911 call that a man was holding a woman against her will.
The victim say the man hit her and threatened her in an attempt to get $500 he believed the victim had in the house. Deputies said the man also choked the victim.
The suspect was identified as 28-year-old Vincent Aviles.
Aviles allegedly grabbed the victim’s firearm, pointed it at her and fired, but the gun was unloaded.
When the gun failed to fire, the victim said Aviles again attempted to choke her. He then took the victim’s car keys, cellphone and credit cards to prevent the victim from leaving.
The victim hit Aviles with a lamp and was later able to contact a family member who was able to call 911.
Deputies arrived and were able to make contact and arrest Aviles.
During a search of Aviles, deputies found tablets of Alprazapram and a white powder that presumptive tested for “molly,” the sheriff’s office said.
Aviles was charged with battery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, attempted murder, grand theft of a firearm, obstructing justice and two counts of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription.
He was taken to the Putnam County Jail March 28 and held without bond.
