US swoops to slam freedoms in Lebanon – just months before massive elections
Washington has become increasingly angry with a ‘crackdown’ in Lebanon, which has seen a journalist jailed for “insulting the military.”
The timing of the response may raise questions, with parliamentary and presidential elections set for next year in Lebanon. Hezbollah has already accused Washington of meddling in the country.
Journalist Radwan Mortada was tried in absentia for remarks blaming the Lebanese military for the deadly Beirut port blast, while accusing the judge leading the investigation of being ‘close’ to the US.
