A deal was struck last month by the US and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) to build a new base on the island nation – an archipelago of more than 600 islands, some 3,700 miles from Hawaii. (Business Insider)
The move by the Biden admin. to increase its presence in Oceania is seen as another step to counter China’s growing influence in the region.
A lack of information about the project is causing anxiety amongst locals – unsure on the size, what kind of base with one local stating: “Any time there is a sudden change to the land, you affect our identity as Native islanders, this will alter the social landscape of our islands.”
