The two people killed in an early Monday wrong-way crash in unincorporated Gurnee have been identified.
The victims were identified as 32-year-old Ronnie Goggans Jr. of Sterling Heights, Michigan (most recently of Grayslake) and 54-year-old Ricky Smallwood of Antioch by the Lake County Coroner’s Office (formerly of North Chicago).
Goggans was driving a Nissan Altima southbound in the northbound lanes of Route 41, half a mile north of Stearns School Road, at about 4:05 a.m. Monday, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the sheriff’s office, the Nissan collided with a northbound Ford Edge driven by Smallwood and burst into flames.
Goggans was pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials.
Smallwood was airlifted to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was listed in critical condition. According to officials, he was later pronounced deceased.
Both Smallwood and Goggans had autopsies performed. It was determined that they both died as a result of blunt force injuries sustained in the crash.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigation Team is still looking into the crash.
