According to the CDPH, two Chicago residents died after being diagnosed with monkeypox.
The individuals, who are believed to be the first in the state to die from the virus, were hospitalized after testing positive for the virus more than six weeks ago.
“Our hearts go out to these people’s families and friends,” CDPH Commissioner Allison Arwady, M.D. said. “While the number of new MPV cases has decreased significantly since the summer, this is a stark reminder that MPV is dangerous and can cause serious illness, and in very rare cases, death.”
According to CDPH, the deaths are unrelated.
According to the World Health Organization, there have been 32 reported deaths among the more than 75,000 cases reported globally in the 2022 outbreak. According to the CDC, five people have died in the United States.
Individuals who meet the eligibility criteria are encouraged to receive two doses of the MPV vaccine 28 days apart.
According to the health department, both of the people who died had multiple health issues and weakened immune systems.
