Tunisia Refers 4 ex-PMs to Trial for Electoral Fraud
19 politicians have been referred to trial by Tunisia’s Court of First Instance for “electoral violations”, including former president Moncef Marzouki and four former Prime Ministers.
The alleged crimes include “illegal electoral propaganda through social media and propaganda during the electoral silence period”, but most political parties have slammed the widespread clampdown as a “coup against the constitution”.
Current President Kais Saied has held near-total power since sacking the PM and suspending parliament in July 2021; a replacement was installed in September, but arrests and abductions of former officials have risen.
