Job Corps offices across the country are being phased out and closed, including some in Maryland, the Trump administration announced Friday.

Phasing out Job Corps in Maryland came as a surprise to even state officials and as a disappointment to those familiar with the service. There is one Job Corps Center in Maryland, the Woodland Job Corps Center in Laurel, as the Woodstock Center in Randallstown closed in December 2024.

Job Corps is a national residential training and employment program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor to address the multiple barriers to employment faced by disadvantaged youth ages 16-24 across the country.

“It was very positive because most of the students in my program were able to obtain their GED and also complete the hotel and lodging program. They could not operate in a structured high school environment, but a lot of students came in with hope and they left with something with a trade.”

Job Corps provides comprehensive career development services to students, including academic, career and technical education, independent living skills, career readiness training and support services.

L.C. Adams spent a year as a Job Corps instructor, teaching classes in the hotel and lodging trade program.
