Toronto city councillor Cynthia Lai has died.
Her campaign manager confirmed the news in a statement.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Councillor Cynthia Lai, Ward 23, Scarborough North this afternoon. She was surrounded by family at the hospital,” the statement read.
“The family has asked for privacy and no further comment will be provided.”
The Ward 23 councillor was running for re-election this year.
According to her biography on the city’s website, Lai was an accomplished real estate career both in sales and in management before entering politics.
