There’s nothing worse than when a bad night’s sleep affects your whole day – getting a good kip in can be difficult for those who struggle to switch off or love caffeine.
It turns out that you be dreaming a lot faster and easier if you put some plants in your bedroom. Not only can they clean your air but they can help you sleep better. David Domoney, Everest ambassador, and horticulturist claims that having house plants can also help you to live longer.
Most plants release moisture into the air in a process called transpiration. Whereas some plants have adapted to conserve water by minimising transpiration and can reduce humidity levels in their immediate vicinity, which in turn will help to reduce condensation on your windows. Condensation and moisture on windows and walls are not only unsightly, it encourages the growth of mould, so keeping on top of condensation to avoid mould is important; it could affect your health.
David, 60, said: “It is well known that many plants can help improve indoor air quality. They absorb pollutants through their leaves, roots, and with microorganisms in the soil filter out harmful compounds which build up in our homes and release clean oxygen.”
He added: “This natural process helps reduce levels of carbon dioxide, increase humidity, and eliminate significant amounts of airborne pollutants, thereby improving the overall air quality within indoor environments. Plants contribute to indoor air quality improvement through a few of their natural processes.”
David, who regularly appears on This Morning, says the presence of plants can also reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance concentration and productivity by creating a more natural, soothing environment. The expert has shared the top 10 plants he thinks would be perfect for the bedroom.
Florist Chrysanthemum
The Florist’s Chrysanthemum – which is known as the ‘mum’ plant – is the most effective plant in removing benzene from the air, a common chemical found in glues, paints, plastics, and detergents. The plant prefers bright, indirect sunlight and requires a bit more care, including regular watering and deadheading to encourage blooming. Whilst this is not a long-living houseplant, it can be greatly enjoyed seasonally.
English Ivy
This plant has a great ability to combat air pollutants. It requires regular trimming to keep it manageable and healthy. It’s also beneficial for reducing airborne faecal particles, making it an excellent choice for pet owners.
Peace Lily
The Peace Lily is said to be one of the best air-purifying houseplants you can own. It’s also known to improve indoor humidity, which can be beneficial for respiratory health.
The plant is known to help purify indoor air while reducing humidity. They thrive in moderate to high-humidity environments, and their watering needs are easily met by keeping their soil consistently moist without overwatering. Peace Lilies are happy in low-light environments and can thrive under fluorescent lights.
Lady Palm
This plant is highly adept at removing formaldehyde and works well in a variety of indoor environments, including offices and homes. Its ability to thrive in low-light conditions and its resistance to pests make it an ideal plant for beginners. The Lady Palm provides not just cleaner air but also an aesthetic enhancement to its surroundings.
Snake Plant
The hardy snake plant is known for its air-purifying qualities and its ability to reduce moisture in the air. The snake plant is perfect for a bedroom as it absorbs water vapour at night, helping to tackle evening condensation on windows. Also, the plant will remove carbon dioxide from the air during the night and produce oxygen which is needed for a good night of sleep.
Also commonly known as the Mother-in-Law’s tongue, it is ideal for beginners as it is so easy to care for. You can forget to water it for a few weeks and the plant will still thrive. You can also place the plant in high humidity or dry rooms.
Red-Edged Dracaena
This striking plant is effective against pollutants such as xylene, trichloroethylene, and formaldehyde. It can grow quite tall, making it a statement piece for room decor.
Care needed: Red-Edged Dracaena thrives in sunlight and requires soil that is kept lightly moist.
