TikTok, YouTube & Snapchat ‘drive kids down algorithmic rabbit holes’ – US senator
US lawmakers have accused popular social media platforms of being dangerous for children. Reps. from TikTok, YouTube and the developer of Snapchat, appeared before the Senate consumer protection subcommittee on Tuesday.
They were summoned as Facebook faces intense scrutiny and renewed backlash following a “whistleblower” complaint — with the tech giants stating they’re focussed on protecting kids.
The platforms argued that they were “an antidote to social media,” and take steps to “empower” users. However, their statements didn’t assure Senators, with the chair of the subcommittee Richard Blumenthal saying, “Being different from Facebook is not a defense, that bar is in the gutter.”
