Around 1 a.m., officers responded to the 3600 block of Stephens Road in Loganville, Georgia after the family of 16-year-old girl called 911.
The girl’s family had located her body lying face down in a wooded area near the road using a cellphone tracking app. They told police she left the house the night before with an unknown person.
The victim was identified as 16-year-old Mia Campos. She was seven months pregnant.
Edward Campos said his daughter was found less than a mile away from home.
Her ex-boyfriend, Jesus Monroy, was arrested two days after Campos’ body was found, although he only faced a charge of lying to police at the time.
Campos’ family confirmed Monroy was the unborn child’s father.
Arrest warrants state Campos was lured to the entrance of her neighborhood and killed by asphyxiation.
On July 23, Monroy is charged with malice murder, felony murder, feticide and aggravated assault.
The investigation remains ongoing. If you have any information about Campos’s death, call the Gwinnett County Police Department at (770) 513-5300 or the Crime Stoppers tip line at (404) 577-8477.
