According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, free-agent running back Rico Dowdle is expected to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dowdle, a Gaffney, S.C. native and University of South Carolina product, spent 2025 as a member of the Panthers.

The 27-year-old finished the campaign having rushed for 1,076 yards along with career-highs in carries (236) and total touchdowns (seven)

After spending the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys, Dowdle inked a one-year pact with the Panthers last spring. He would take over as the team’s starter in Week 5, following a calf injury to Chuba Hubbard.

Dowdle made the most of his opportunity right away, rushing for 206 yards and a touchdown in a 27-24 win over the Miami Dolphins. He’d follow that performance up with 183 rushing yards, 56 receiving yards and another score in a 30-27 triumph against the Cowboys.
