The rate of crime in Chicago is higher than in other nearby cities. It is also four times as high as the average murder rate for the whole country.
- Every year, about 21 people out of every 100,000 are shot. Every year, 21 people are killed per 100,000 people. So, be careful at night and always pay attention to what’s going on around you.
- Every year, there are an average of 259 thefts for every 100,000 people. It’s best to only carry enough cash for the day or maybe one or two days more, if necessary. Check your pockets every time you leave a place or go out. Lastly, be careful not to show your money when it’s not necessary.
- Every year, there are 566 assaults for every 100,000 people. So it’s always a good idea to take a taxi at night instead of walking around the streets alone.
- Every year, 67 rapes happen for every 100,000 people. So you shouldn’t walk around by yourself. After dark, always try to take a taxi and never walk alone on the streets.
There are also a lot of crimes against property, with 4,122 each year.
So, if you go out at night, you should be careful and always be aware of your surroundings. Also, when you travel, keep a close eye on your things at all times.
Keep your things in plain sight to keep them safe. When you go to Chicago, put your valuables in a locker at the hotel or in a safety deposit box at a bank.Â
Statistics say that the crime rate in Chicago in 2020 was 3,926 crimes per 100,000 people. That’s 67% more than the national average and a lot more than Illinois’s average rate of 1,985 crimes per 100,000 people.
Part of the reason why Chicago’s crime rates are talked about so much is that violent crimes like murder, sexual assault, and robberies are a bigger part of the city’s high crime rate than property crimes like burglary, arson, or car theft.Â
In Chicago, there is a 1 in 103 chance that you will be hurt by a violent crime.
That’s twice as likely as the average in Illinois, but it’s important to remember that just because you live in Chicago doesn’t mean you’re in more danger.
Your risk of violence can be affected by things like your social class, your neighborhood, and the people you know.Â
Note: Sixty-six people were killed across the city in August, new department data shows, which brings the total number of homicides in 2022 up to 448.
That’s below the pace set in each of the last two years, but the total is more than 100 homicides higher than the first eight months of 2019.
