The Michigan Department of State says that police are investigating after a backpack was left unattended at a polling location in Linden.
Secretary of State spokesperson Jake Rollow says that police were called after an election worker noticed the backpack and could not find an owner.
During today’s August State Primary Election, the Polling Location for the City of Linden was evacuated.
The City of Linden Clerk’s Department wants to reassure our voters, as well as candidates seeking office, that it is doing everything possible to ensure the integrity of this election is maintained, given the unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances.
The City of Linden Clerk’s Department has been in contact with the Bureau of Elections, as well as the Department of State.
They were made aware of the situation immediately, in addition to law enforcement. We are currently adhering to the guidance provided by the Bureau of Elections, as well as the Secretary of State Department.
Police are investigating the location according to the Secretary of State’s Office.
Rollow says out of an abundance of caution, the polling location has been moved to City Hall in Linden, so citizens still have a place to vote.
Linden Police Chief tells Mid-Michigan NOW that police are doing a thorough sweep of the building where the polling location was, which was Faith Baptist Church.
In addition to election integrity, the safety of our voters, election workers and staff is of the utmost importance.
The Polling Place remains closed for the duration of the investigation. City Hall is currently open and will maintain polling place hours today, Tuesday, August 2, 2022, until 8:00 p.m. for voting.
The FBI has recovered the backpack, and says that there was a “suspicious package” inside.
Linden PD says there is no threat to the public at this time.
