Texas public libraries have been busy banning books on subjects of race and sexuality of late – notably ones geared towards children.
Records of nearly 100 school districts in the state’s most populated cities showed 75 submitted request by parents or community members to ban books from libraries in just four months – last year saw just one request in the same timeframe.
Books as a medium did not have a good year in the politically polarised US.
In January, a school board in Tennessee voted to remove the Pulitzer prize winning Holocaust story ‘Maus’ from the curriculum, citing “inappropriate language” and nude imagery.
