Teen dies after hunter who mistook him for a squirrel while hunting near Iowa City

According to reports, a 17-year-old Iowa teen, Carson Ryan, was shot in the head Saturday by a fellow hunter who mistook him for a squirrel while hunting near Iowa City. Ryan later died from his injuries at University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center.
His death is under investigation by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Washington County sheriff’s office.
On September 27, 2025, 17-year-old Carson Ryan was fatally shot during a hunting trip near Brighton, Iowa. A member of his hunting party allegedly mistook him for a squirrel and shot him in the back of the head. Ryan later died from his injuries at University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident as an accidental shooting.
No charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
A GoFundMe was established on behalf of Ryan’s family, which has raised over $53,000 as of Tuesday.
