A teenager is in the hospital after taking off in a stolen car, being shot by a Memphis Police officer and crashing, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI).
The TBI said the incident happened early Monday morning, at about 10:40 a.m., on Peres Avenue
Memphis Police officers found a stolen grey Dodge Challenger and saw someone get into the car, the TBI said. The officers then approached that person, who turned out to be a male juvenile, according to the TBI. The TBI did not release an age for that juvenile, but FOX13 has learned that the child is a teenager.
Details on what happened next were still scarce when the TBI gave an update on the case around 4 p.m., but the TBI did say that at some point one of the Memphis Police officers fired a shot at the teen as he sped off in the stolen car.
A second officer then found the teen crashed out in the stolen Challenger near Chelsea and Boxwood.
The teen had gunshot wounds and was taken to Regional One Hospital in critical condition. The TBI did not have an update on his condition as of 4 p.m. on Monday.
An officer was also non-critically injured during the incident, but no details surrounding how the officer was injured were released and the TBI could not say if the teen fired any shots at the officer.
The TBI said that the juvenile wasn’t necessarily driving away, but was inside the car when he was shot.
When FOX13 made the scene, officers had the area of Chelsea and Boxwood taped off, surrounding the empty car.
Memphis Police told FOX13 that the officer who fired the shots has been routinely relieved of duty pending the ongoing investigation.
